PREMIUM NITRILE O RINGS IN A FULL RANGE OF SIZES
The Bearing Company has a range of specialist nitrile O rings at competitive prices. We offer both complete O rings, and O ring cords (available in lengths of one metre with cross sections ranging from 1.0mm to 9.5mm) which are used for making your own O rings or for emergency repairs. This allows you to create reliable seals for large or non-standard dimensions.
This expansive range is designed to suit every need – from household repairs like lawn mower maintenance to large-scale engineering projects.
WHAT ARE O RINGS USED FOR?
O rings are one of the most common and useful mechanical seals you can find. They are designed and rated in such a way that they provide a strong water and air-tight seal between two connected surfaces. An O ring can be fitted in either dynamic or static applications and when compressed between pipes, valves or other surfaces, it will deform and take the appropriate shape to plug any gaps.
These qualities and versatility mean that O ring seals are most commonly used in hydraulic systems, the automotive industry, aerospace, electronics, medical equipment, plumbing and the food industry.
BENEFITS OF O RING SEALS
There are numerous benefits to incorporating O rings into your project or mechanical system. They are highly cost-effective and adaptable, offering simplicity, durability and reliability with little maintenance.
The immediate benefit is the leak prevention they offer. Due to their malleable nature, they will fit whatever space they are compacted into. This prevents both liquid and air leaks, ensuring the efficient and stable operation of machinery, pipework and more. This strong leak prevention also ensures that the correct pressure is maintained throughout any system. Having the correct sealing will help extend the lifespan of your equipment and ensure its continued efficient operation.
Like all good seals, O rings are highly resistant to corrosive elements, have a high level of durability and will keep working as a protective barrier for years.

FAQs
Finding the correct measurement for an O ring is fairly simple, as long as you make sure the ring is not being compressed during the check.
· Inside diameter (ID)- inside edge to inside edge
· Outside diameter (OD)- outside edge to outside edge
· Radial cross-section (RCS)- the thickness of the O ring measured from an inside edge to its closest outer edge
· Axial cross-section- this is the depth of the O ring
If you are unable to reach the whole O ring to measure it, these equations can help.
OD = ID + (2xRCS)
RCS = (OD-ID) ÷ 2
ID = OD – (2xCS)
Neither is actually any better than the other; it depends on its proposed application.
Thicker O rings are a more robust option that are better for high-pressure environments where they will be subject to more movement. They are more compression-resistant and are obviously better for larger gaps. But thicker rings require more force to install, and because of higher friction, can be susceptible to twisting.
Thinner O rings require less compressive force, are more cost-effective and are the better choice for smaller, low-pressure static applications. But they can deform under high levels of pressure and don’t last quite as long.
Nitrile (Buna-N) is the best material for an oil-resistant O-ring. It has many applications due to its excellent resistance to petroleum-based oils and fuels. It offers a great balance of performance, durability and affordability. With good mechanical properties and impressive temperature tolerances (approx.-40°C to 125°C), nitrile O rings are ideal for nearly any industry’s mechanical systems where effective sealing against oil is critical.
